Reference in Robotics: a Givenness Hierarchy Theoretic Approach

چکیده
As robots become increasingly prevalent in our society, it becomes increasingly important to endow them with natural language capabilities. Natural language capabilities are especially important for robots designed to operate in domains such as eldercare robotics, education robotics, space robotics, and urban search-and-rescue robotics. In eldercare robotics and education robotics, it may simply be too cognitively burdensome for the target population to learn to interact with their would-be caregiving or educational assistants through some other modality. In space robotics and urban search-and-rescue robotics, it may be too physically burdensome for the target population to interact with their would-be assistants or rescuers, due to, e.g., lack of gravity, or trapped limbs. In urban search-and-rescue

1 Underspecification of Cognitive Status in Reference Production : Some Empirical Predictions
Within the Givenness Hierarchy framework of Gundel, Hedberg, & Zacharski (1993), lexical items included in referring forms are assumed to conventionally encode two kinds of information: conceptual information about the speaker’s intended referent and procedural information about the assumed cognitive status of that referent in the mind of the addressee, the latter encoded by various determiners...
متن کاملApplying the Givenness Hierarchy Framework: Methodological Issues
This paper will discuss methodological issues that arise in applying the Givenness Hierarchy framework (Gundel, Hedberg and Zacharski, 1993, Language) to describe the reference systems of different languages. The Givenness Hierarchy is a set of six ‘cognitive statuses’ that govern the use of different determiner and pronominal forms in languages. These statuses constitute different psychologica...

متن کاملFocus and Givenness: A Unified Approach
Theories about information structure differ in treating focus-, contrast-, and givenness-marking as either a single phenomenon or as distinct phenomena. This paper argues for a unified approach, following the lead of Schwarzschild (1999), but a unified approach based on local alternatives (Wagner, 2005, 2006b). The basic insights of the local alternatives approach are captured using a new forma...
